AFRICATS

In September, during a memorable getaway with my family in Essaouira, Morocco, I turned my lens toward an unexpected subject: the town’s resilient stray cats. “Africats” is a documentary photography project that unveils Morocco’s spirit through these often-overlooked creatures.

Essaouira’s narrow streets became the backdrop for my exploration, revealing the cats’ grace and mystery amidst the town’s vibrant textures. Each photo tells a story of Morocco’s essence—a land of adaptability and enduring beauty.

Unexpectedly, on September 8, 2023, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Marrakech, minutes after my departure. This tragedy underscores life’s unpredictability.

These images capture Morocco through the eyes of its feline inhabitants just days before the disaster, reminding us of the country’s strength in adversity. “Africats” invites you to see Morocco’s beauty in the everyday and its resilience in the face of uncertainty, honoring the enduring spirit of this remarkable place.
